Why have a code of conduct?
We want everyone at the event to be able to focus their full attention on engaging in meaningful conversations, learning, and enjoying the event. This requires an environment free from harassment, discrimination, and any form of misconduct.
Accordingly, all attendees and organizers are expected to show respect and courtesy to each other in all interactions, whether in person or online.
We have adopted the following code of conduct to ensure a common understanding and safe environment for everyone.
Expected behavior
We want our event to be an excellent experience for everyone regardless of gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disabilities, neurodiversity, physical appearance, body size, ethnicity, nationality, race, age, religion, or other protected category.
- Treat others the way they would like to be treated. For example, you may enjoy a friendly hug to welcome someone, but that doesn’t mean others would enjoy that as well. Listen, be considerate of the boundaries of other participants, and respond accordingly.
- Treat everyone with respect and dignity. All the attendees have the right to enjoy our experience without fear of harassment, discrimination, or condescension. Be respectful of all the participants, as well as the rules and the policies of the venue and staff.
- Avoid making assumptions, be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants, and speak up if you see or hear something that makes you uncomfortable. For example, someone might be discussing a topic that you are not comfortable discussing. If someone is making you uncomfortable, politely bring this to their attention and respectfully discourage them from such behavior, as they may not be aware of what they are doing and how this might be affecting you.
- Alert event organizers and/or on-premises personnel (e.g., venue staff, security personnel), and/or other appropriate authorities (e.g., police department), if you notice a dangerous situation or someone clearly in distress.
Unacceptable behavior
The following types of behavior are unacceptable at the event and constitute code of conduct violations.
- Harassment in any form or kind of behavior, including but not limited to, bullying, threatening, stalking, intimidation, microaggressions, insinuations or disparaging comments that are hurtful or interfere with any other attendee’s experience.
- Sexual harassment, including but not limited to, unwanted or inappropriate conduct, unwanted sexual attention, requests for sexual favors, comments, jokes, advances, or other verbal or physical conduct pertaining to a person’s sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding or related medical conditions), and/or of a sexual nature.
- Discrimination in any form, including but not limited to unfair or prejudicial treatment, exclusion, or preference on the basis of the group, class, or category that a person belongs to or is perceived to belong to, jokes and language based on sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, gender identity, religion/creed, national origin or political views.
- Other offensive behavior and illegal activity, including but not limited to, violence, threats of violence, gross misconduct or other forms of harassment not covered above.
- Inappropriate photography or recording / candid photography, including within the event environment for personal purposes and/or use on social media, without the prior permission of the individuals or owners of the content therein.
- Drinking in an irresponsible manner, smoking other than in designated areas, or consuming any illicit substances.
- Failure to obey any rules or regulations of the event venue, including any destruction or vandalizing of personal or event property and materials.
- Maliciousness towards other participants, including deliberately attempting to make others feel bad, name-calling, or singling out others for derision or exclusion.
Venue rules
- Do not let people into the venue. Only security officers and event organizers can grant entry.
- Do not strip down to your underwear (or further) in any areas outside of your personal bedroom, unless you’re nursing your child.
- Quiet hours in The Park after 10 pm – please keep noise down to a whisper or below in The Park to avoid disrupting the venue’s neighbors.
- Get explicit organizer permission before risking broken furniture, venue damage, or setting anything on fire.
- Do not enter bedrooms or sleeping areas that are not yours without the resident’s explicit permission.
- No smoking on-site, including weed, cigarettes, or anything else that has a strong smell.
- No non-human animals on-site without explicit permission from venue staff.
Consequences of unacceptable behavior
Anyone who is asked to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in unacceptable behavior and continues to violate this Policy, event organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, whether it’s a disciplinary action, expulsion from the event without warning or refund, or notifying local law enforcement as necessary.
Reporting
We want to hear from you about anything that you feel is disrespectful, inappropriate, threatening, or simply “feels off”. We are committed to listening and taking appropriate steps to resolve the matter. If you are subjected to unacceptable behavior, notice or witness that another participant is being subjected to unacceptable behavior, or have any other concerns, please notify the event organizers immediately.
Retaliation
Praxis prohibits retaliation of any kind against attendees or others covered by this Policy, who, in good faith, report harassment and/or discrimination, participate in an investigation, or who otherwise assist in investigating such complaints.
Photography & videography policy
We might take some photos and videos during the event for internal documentation and possible future use (e.g., our website or materials for future iterations of Praxis). That said, we want everyone to feel comfortable:
- If you’d prefer not to appear in photos, let us know and we’ll make sure you’re not photographed.
- We’ll ask for your consent before posting any photo or video in which you’re identifiable online or in promotional materials.
- If you’re taking photos yourself, please get consent from the people in them before sharing publicly – especially on social media.
For additional information or questions, please contact any of the staff members listed above.
